You can donate food or clothing to local shelters such as the one at College Park High School, donate to organizations such as the Red Cross either online or via text (text “HARVEY” to 909-99). Texans’ defensive end J.J. Watt is also heading up a fundraiser which has received $10 million in donations.

While we look to recover, help and move forward, here are some pictures. These images, and more, can also be viewed in our galleries.

Building a swimming pool: a multi-decade investment

If you read anything on this website, please check out this article on what to do when meeting your pool builder. A pool is a long-term investment, therefore it’s important to have a game plan going in and carefully consider everything before signing a contract. So no matter what you do, read the above article. It can also be found under the “What to Consider” menu along the menu bar at the top of the page.

Investment in a pool: It’s not like buying jeans

The purpose of this article is to emphasize how important and how permanent installing a new swimming pool is. When you install a swimming pool, you are choosing a long-term investment — kind of like a 401K for your house. Therefore, this isn’t a process that you should cut corners and be cavalier about. A few days of contemplation — not only on what you’re willing to spend on a pool and spa, but what kind of features you want to have in your pool — are well worth it. A swimming pool isn’t an instant gratification gift like a pair of jeans or a brand-new shirt — something that you’ll use for three days and forget about. A swimming pool is something that can last three decades.

At Ultimate Pools, we realize this and that’s why we don’t use high-pressure sales tactics and work with you at every step of the process. From design to cost to maintenance, we make an investment in each pool that we build and keep track of the pools after they’re built. A swimming pool and spa is something that should bring you enjoyment for years and decades to come. We want you to enjoy your pool without thinking “what if?” or “what might have been.”

We try to remember these things every time we meet with a customer about installing a swimming pool. We recognize the investment that our customers make with Ultimate Pools and go out of our way to invest ourselves equally.

Building a pool around irrigation systems

Very rarely does building a swimming pool simply involve digging a hole and installing a pool within that hole. Not only are there the occasional weather concerns (especially during thunderstorm season), but you also have to deal with things that are already in the backyard. Sometimes it’s as simple as moving playground equipment around or rearranging mulch and flower beds, but a lot of the time there are more complicated elements. Irrigation systems fall under that category.

The piping, valves and wiring that are involved in irrigation systems make dealing with them a formidable task. Valves and wires can be hit, pipes need to be re-routed, the system often needs to be shut down and re-done. For most pool builders, that’s a complicated process which involves separate companies and weeks of additional side labor. That’s not the case with Ultimate Pools.

Dealing with irrigation systems

Before Ultimate Pools designed its first blueprint of a swimming pool, it dealt with the installation of irrigation systems under A Total Coverage. A Total Coverage installed sprinkler systems and outdoor improvements for much of the 1990s before pivoting into swimming pool installation in 1999. That experience carries over into what we do today, as we can skillfully navigate and rewire irrigation systems and relocate sprinkler valves.

The co-founder of Ultimate Pools, Bryan Stuart, is a Texas Licensed Irrigator #4542. What does that mean for you? Substantial savings — from money to time to overall hassle. Instead of having to call a side irrigation company to come deal with the carnage of digging in a pool, we can handle that for you. From replacing the wiring and valves to making any adjustments on piping, we are a one-stop shop for pool and irrigation work.

Along with not having the hassle to hire another company, we can handle any irrigation alterations at less of a cost and with less downtime than if you hire another company. How does that work exactly? Since we are dealing with the pool excavation and irrigation system concurrently, we have the ability to make the irrigation alterations before installing the pool’s plumbing. We can determine what wires and valves need to be altered during the excavation process and plan accordingly, getting that taken care of before the plumbing is installed.

That’s not something most companies can do. Instead of taking inventory during the process, they dig first, install plumbing and the pool, then figure out what to do with the irrigation systems later. That involves contacting an irrigation company, which often has to re-do its original system from scratch to fit with the pool. That costs money and time, as the system could be down for a couple of months after excavation, installation of the pool and re-installation of the irrigation system.

Meanwhile, our ability to adjust irrigation systems concurrently reduce down time to about a week after excavation for front and side sprinklers.

Pictures from another pool transformation

We touched on the Groner pool replastering in a previous post, as Matthew Groner graciously allowed us to use photos he took of the remodel. But we also took a few photos of our own to document the transformation of the old Groner pool to Groner pool 2.0.

Pictures from a remodel in The Woodlands

Along with building brand-new swimming pools, we also look to remodel existing swimming pools. Think of remodels like a swimming-pool makeover. Take your old swimming pool, alter it a bit and it’s as good as new. Remodels aren’t easy and aren’t able to be done on every pool, but when they are, they can inject new life into your backyard.

Here are some pictures of a remodel that we did in the Cochran’s Crossing neighborhood in The Woodlands.

The remodel process

Here are some initial photos of what the pool used to look like. Notice the brick coping on the spa and encircling in the first picture and the weathered tile in picture No. 2. The customer was looking to trade the brick coping for flagstone coping and upgrade from the tile, along with getting a plaster facelift. These pictures give you an idea of what we were originally working with.

One of the first things we did was rip out the coping all around the pool and the spa. We also stripped the tile that encircled the hot tub. Here are some pictures of us “doing out with the old.” The first two deal with the coping around the pool while the rest concentrate on the spa.

As mentioned above, we also resurfaced the pool, which included replastering. Notice the holes in the bottom of the pool. They are called weep holes and are essential in surfacing a pool because they don’t allow the shell to “float” away. You can read more on that concept here while enjoying these pictures.

Finishing the remodel

Now that you’ve seen the process, here are the results. As you’ll notice, the brick encircling the pool and the shelf of the spa has been replaced with flagstone, and the weathered tile along the sides is now eye-catching brick. We also added a pretty sturdy rock formation alongside the spa. That goes with a nice plant area alongside the edge of the pool, and we resurfaced the pool with a nice new layer of plaster.

In case you were worried, the spa works just like new. We even tried it out!
